Cat6 Plenum Cable, for example, has a CMP-rated jacket, but Cat6a Riser Cable has a CMR-rated jacket. Cat5e cable with a PVC jacket is also known as Cat5e PVC cable.

6 Things You Need to Know About Ethernet Cables

CCA vs. Bare Copper: What's the Difference?


An ethernet cable's conductor is a necessary component. Pure copper (sometimes known as solid copper or bare copper) or copper-clad aluminum conductors are used. All choose bare copper conductors since they outperform CCA conductors in every field. On the other hand, pure copper ethernet cables are far more expensive than copper-clad aluminum cables; the former offers superior protection against crosstalk and other interferences, allowing signal quality to be maintained.


Ratings for Cable Jackets


There are multiple jacket ratings for Cat5e ethernet cable, Cat6 ethernet cable, and Cat6a ethernet cable.


In the plenum spaces of the buildings, you will install plenum-rated Ethernet cables. Plenum cables have a jacket made of high-quality polyvinyl chloride. Because the risk of fire is higher in plenum areas, when these cables are exposed to fire, they function as a fire retardant and stop the fire from spreading. Plenum cables can also be used in riser spaces.


Riser-rated cables are used in the building's riser spaces. Riser-rated ethernet cables have good jacket material, but it is not as good as plenum cables. Furthermore, these cables are not a substitute for plenum cables.


PVC-rated wires will be used for outside installations.


Capabilities in terms of bandwidth


Bulk Cat5e ethernet cable, Cat6 ethernet cable, and Cat6a ethernet cable have dramatically different bandwidth capabilities. Cat5e cable has a bandwidth of 300 MHz, Cat6 has a bandwidth of 550 MHz, and Cat6a has 750 MHz.


Rates of Data Transfer


Cat5e can transmit data at 1Gbps over a distance of 100 meters. Cat6a is capable of transmitting data at a staggering 10Gbps over a distance of 50 meters. The data transfer speed drops to 1Gbps when the distance is increased to 100 meters (similar to Cat5e). Cat6a is capable of transmitting data at a rate of 10 Gbps over a distance of 100 meters. All of these cables are capable of meeting the requirements of any existing application. Installing Cat6 or Cat6a ethernet cable will allow you to upgrade later.


AWG


The gauge of all ethernet cables ranges from 22AWG to 26AWG. The smaller the diameter of the conductor, the higher the AWG.


Shielded vs. Unshielded


Manufacturers provide an extra layer of protection to defend against crosstalk. All four twisted pairs are wrapped in tightly braided wire or foil in shielded ethernet cables in bulk, while another braided layer protects the entire set of conductors. Signal quality is not harmed, and it provides top-level protection against crosstalk and EMI. STP cables are suited for use in areas with high levels of crosstalk or EMI. These safeguards are not available on unshielded ethernet wires. They're ideal for installations in areas with no or minimal crosstalk or EMI.
